Winnik Ways The Toronto Maple Leafs are hearing offers, but they arent ready to start selling just yet. According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the Leafs received an offer from the Pittsburgh Penguins - one of the busier clubs ahead of the deadline - for utility forward Daniel Winnik last week. It was last week and we shouldnt be surprised by it but the Pittsburgh Penguins put in an offer on Daniel Winnik, Dreger said on TSN Radio 1050. Pittsburgh is doing a pretty good job of getting their business done well before the trade deadline. The Penguins acquired F David Perron from the Edmonton Oilers at the beginning of January and traded F Marcel Goc to the St. Louis Blues for F Maxim Lapierre on Tuesday. Winnik has three goals and 17 assists this season with the Maple Leafs and has played on all four lines as well as seeing time on the penalty kill. He leads the club with a plus-13 rating. They (Pittsburgh) wouldve preferred to tweak their third line and felt that Daniel Winnik wouldve been a real nice add to that third line with (Brandon) Sutter and maybe Nick Spaling, but understandably the Toronto Maple Leafs, they want a decent price. They may need return for Daniel Winnik if theyre going to consider that trade. Its a little early for the Leafs. We look at the standings and see Toronto is 10 points back but theyre not ready to wave the towel yet. Flaming Lips The Calgary Flames are looking into the possibility of acquiring centre Mike Richards from the Los Angeles Kings. According to Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun, a source confirmed GM Brad Treliving has inquired about the 29-year-olds services. The two-time Stanley Cup champion cleared waivers Tuesday and is expected to report to the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL this week. Francis reports the Flames would be interested in adding a player like Tyler Toffoli or Tanner Pearson to a potential deal with Richards, who has five years left on his contract with an annual cap hit of $5.75 million. Richards, who has been in steady decline since a career-high 80 point season with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2008-2009, has just five goals and 10 assists in 47 games this season. Yard sale? The Carolina Hurricanes have a handful of pending unrestrcited free agents that could find themselves in other jerseys by the time the trade deadline rolls around. According to Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer, GM Ron Francis has stated that many of the potential UFAs could be shipped out for players or picks. “That’s just the way the business works,” F Jay McClement said. “There’s going to be a lot of speculation, especially with UFAs.” McClement joins F Jiri Tlusty, F Patrick Dwyer, D Andrej Sekera, D Tim Gleason and D Brett Bellemore as Hurricanes who will be without contracts on July 1. Sekera has expressed interest in staying, saying “hopefully we’ll get something done.” Alexander also reports that Francis has spoken to the agents of Sekera and Tlusty in search of the right price and right term for both players. Franchitti also fractured two vertebrae in his spine and received a concussion. He had surgery on the ankle Sunday night and remained in the hospital afterward. Franchitti is expected to return to Indianapolis on Wednesday and have a second surgery on his ankle. "Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes. They mean a lot to me," Franchitti said in a statement from Target Chip Ganassi Racing. " I would also like to send my best to all the fans involved in the accident and hope that everyone is all right." Thirteen fans and an IndyCar official were injured by debris that flew into the grandstand. Two people were taken to the hospital; Tony Kanaan tweeted a picture of himself and fellow driver Scott Dixon visiting one of the fans and wrote: "Glad to see everybody is ok." The accident occurred when Franchitti ran into the back of Takuma Satos car and launched over it and into the fence. Sato appeared to have a problem with his car and was limping toward the finish when Franchitti came up quickly behind him in Turn 5. The force of the crash tore apart a section of the fence and showered debris into the grandstand, which had a second fence in front of the fans. Franchittis car ricocheted back onto the track and spun several times before coming to a stop. E.J. Viso hit Satos car as he came upon the accident scene, and the three wrecked cars and broken parts and pieces clogged the race course. IndyCar threw the yellow flag, ending the race under caution, but drivers still had to navigate their way through the wreckage on their way back to pit road. Odell Beckham Jr Jersey. It created a scene reminiscent of Dan Wheldons fatal 2011 crash at Las Vegas, where competitors also had to drive past Wheldons car and through the debris. It was a sobering moment for race winner Will Power, who broke his back in the Las Vegas crash, and for Dixon, Franchittis teammate. Dixon took control of the IndyCar championship race on Sunday but passed by teammate Franchittis car and waved in an attempt to get an update on his condition. Power watched replays of the accident on the big screen, and said the accident reminded him of Las Vegas, where he and Wheldon both sailed into the fence. "I just saw Darios car and him sitting in it with a lot of damage, and yes, thats what it reminded me of," said Power. "I hate seeing that. We try to keep these cars on the ground." The accident ended a weekend that saw Dixon move into the points lead following mechanical failures for Helio Castroneves on consecutive days. Castroneves came to Houston with a 49-point lead over Dixon. But a gearbox problem Saturday when Dixon won allowed Dixon to pull within eight points. Then his gearbox broke on Sunday, and Dixon now has a 25-point lead in the standings and needs only to finish fifth or better in the Oct. 19 finale in California to win his third IndyCar title. "Its still going to come down to the wire," he said. "Its still going to be the last lap, last corner kind of situation. At least I hope that it ends that way."
