Wichita scored four runs in the first inning off Goldeyes starter Joe Sintes and cruised to a 10-3 victor, as Wichita improved to a league-best 53-32 on the season. With the loss, the Goldeyes had their two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 47-30. Their lead over the St. Paul Saints in the North Division of the American Association fell to just two games. The Saints beat Sioux City 4-2 on Thursday. “We just dug ourselves a hole early and couldnt quite climb out of it,” said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. “When we scored three runs in the fourth to make it 5-3, I thought we might have a chance to come back, but he (starter Joe Sintes) loaded the bases and we gave up that grand slam (reliever Taylor Bratton) and that was it. “Thats a good team playing very well right now. But in the top of the fifth, Wichita got the grand slam from McMurray, that made it 9-3 and the Goldeyes were done. Jason Van Skike (9-3, 3.19 ERA), who started the All-Star Game in Winnipeg late last month, earned the victory, while Sintes (0-2, 13.50 ERA) suffered the loss. There was no save. The Wingnuts finished with 10 runs on 12 hits, while the Goldeyes managed just three runs on 12 hits. The Goldeyes left at least one runner on base in every inning but the ninth. The Goldeyes and Wingnuts will meet in Game 2 of this four-game series on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Shaw Park.
