Less than two weeks after being traded from the Browns, the 2012 first-round draft pick will be given more carries and a bigger role Sunday after starter Ahmad Bradshaw was ruled out with a neck injury. Richardson, who has been studying his playbook relentlessly, said hes ready. "Ive been learning the game plan every day and sticking my face in that playbook two hours after practice, an hour before practice, at the meetings and stuff," Richardson said. "Ive been studying hard so I feel like that work load, Im ready to go for it." The Colts (2-1) dont have much choice. Their original starter, Vick Ballard, went down with a season-ending knee injury before Indys second game. Bradshaw started in a loss to Miami and again last week against San Francisco, four days after the Colts sent a 2014 first-round pick to Cleveland for Richardson. Bradshaw responded with his best game since joining the Colts in June, rushing 19 times for 95 yards and a late touchdown. But he took a big shot early in the game. Initially, he tried to get up before falling to his knees. Coach Chuck Pagano wouldnt say whether that was the play on which Bradshaw was injured. So when the Colts practiced Friday, the only healthy running backs on the active roster were Richardson, Donald Brown, another former first-rounder, and fullback Stanley Havili. Indy could activate rookie Kerwynn Williams, a seventh-round draft pick, from the practice squad. Pagano wouldnt say if the Colts would do that or how the carries would be split up, only that Richardson has to be ready for more work at winless Jacksonville (0-3). "Hes got no choice," Pagano said when asked if Richardson had enough time to learn the offence. "David Walker is a great football coach and a great teacher. He did an unbelievable job getting Trent ready for last Sunday and hell do the same for this week. Between him and Donnie and the rest of the crew, well go down there and hopefully get the job done." Bradshaw wont be the only starter missing Sunday. Pagano said Pro Bowl safety LaRon Landry would miss his second straight game with an ankle injury, while defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois was ruled out with a groin injury. Jean Francois left the San Francisco game early. Neither has practiced this week because of the injuries. Last week, Delano Howell replaced Landry and played well as the Colts turned in their best defensive game of the season. For Richardson, though, this is his first big chance to show the Colts he can be the workhorse back they expect. Last week, he carried 13 times for 35 yards and scored on a 1-yard run on his first carry with the Colts, and was brought in to help pass protect when the 49ers blitzed. This week, hell be asked to do even more, and Richardson cant wait. "I think every playbook runs some of the same plays as far as running, just with different terminology," he said. "Staying with that, youre going to have your inside zones, outside zones, your powers. But in the passing game, youve just got to know what youre doing." The players union said it was considering legal action over the decision. NFL-appointed arbitrator Harold Henderson ruled that Petersons indefinite suspension for violating the leagues personal conduct policy was not unfair or inconsistent, as Petersons appeal argued, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said. League commissioner Roger Goodell announced last month that Peterson would be suspended without pay at least through the remainder of this season after the star running back pleaded no contest to a charge of misdemeanor reckless assault for striking his 4-year-old son with a wooden tree branch in May. Henderson ruled Peterson was afforded all the protections and rights to which he is entitled and found no basis to vacate or reduce the discipline. The NFL Players Association said in a statement that it expected Petersons appeal to be denied because of what it called Hendersons relationship and financial ties to the NFL. Henderson is a former longtime NFL executive who dealt mostly in player and labor relations during his time with the league. The decision itself ignores the facts, the evidence and the collective bargaining agreement, the union said. This decision also represents the NFLs repeated failure to adhere to due process and confirms its inconsistent treatment of players. The union said it was considering immediate legal remedies. Last month, it accused Goodell and the NFL of denying Peterson due process by making up the process and punishment as it goes while calling for the case to be heard by an independent and neutral arbitrator. Under the NFL suspension, Peterson will not be considered for reinstatement prior to April 15 and he will forfeit six game checks. The union argued that Peterson was penalized under a revised personal conduct policy issued in late August, months after the incident occurred. The NFL beefed up the language in its policy in response to mounting criticism over the Ray Rice case. Rice won his appeal against the NFL last month, overturning his indefinite suspension for punching his now-wife inside an Atlantic City casino elevator in February. The former Baltimore Ravens star, whose original two-game ban was changed to an indefinite suspension after video of the incident surfaced, is free to sign with any team. Peterson hasnt played since the Vikings season opener Sept. 7. The two-time NFL rushing champion was originally charged with reckless or negligent injury to a child, but pleaded no contest to the lesser misdemeanor offense after working out an agreement with the Montgomery County (Texas) district attorney.
